Hawaii Driving Fatalities Increased in 2015

Fatal collisions increased in Hawaii in 2015 by over 70 percent. While the overall numbers are still fairly low, fatalities jumped from 11 in 2014 to 19 the following year. These 19 deaths were the result of 15 collisions, only four more than the 11 fatal crashes in 2014. Police blamed the increased number of deaths on multiple fatalities in some of the crashes.

Of the 15 fatal collisions in Hawaii last year, 12 involved impaired drivers. Police arrested 1,064 people for driving drunk or under the influence of drugs over the course of the year, and nearly 80 of these drivers were under 21 years of age.

In addition to driving while impaired, other factors that contribute to fatal traffic accidents include:

  • It is harder for drivers to stop or avoid obstacles when their speed exceeds a safe level. Speed also increases the energy involved in accidents, often leading to more serious injuries.
  • Distracted driving. When drivers are on their cellphones, adjusting their radios or even having a conversation with a passenger, their eyes or attention can stray from the road. Hawaii law prevents drivers under 18 from using electronic devices while driving and requires those 18 or older to use hands-free devices.
  • Drowsy driving. When drivers are tired, their reaction times are slowed as much as those of someone who has had a few drinks. A driver’s decision-making abilities and attention span also suffer with lack of sleep.
  • Reckless driving. Ignoring traffic signals, weaving through traffic, and other reckless behavior behind the wheel puts other drivers, passengers and pedestrians at risk.

Many traffic fatalities are avoidable. When someone’s negligent or reckless behavior causes the death of another, we work with the deceased’s family to get justice. Hawaii allows a representative to bring this type of claim on behalf of the estate of the deceased. Damages available in wrongful death cases can include compensation for:

  • Medical expenses
  • Lost wages
  • Funeral expenses
  • Loss of care
  • Loss of companionship
