With 30 years of trial experience, Roy K. S. Chang has molded Shim & Chang into a highly creative and innovative law firm. He has had extensive practical and trial experience handling all types of personal injury cases.
Born and raised in Honolulu, Roy K. S. Chang graduated Cum Laude from Iolani School in 1968. He attended The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. on a four year debating and academic scholarship. He graduated "With Distinction" in 1972 and as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He enrolled in a Masters in Education program also at The George Washington University in 1972, and completed his masters in 1974. While completing his masters, he also attended The Washington College of Law of the American University, where he earned his Juris Doctorate in 1975.
He returned to Hawai`i in 1976 and began his practice of law at the Prosecuting Attorney's Office of the City and County of Honolulu. He so distinguished himself as a trial attorney that he was asked to start and head the Career Criminal Unit for the Prosecuting Attorney's Office of the County of Kauai.
In 1979, the then law firm of Shim, Sigal, Tam & Naito felt that his trial experience and talents could be better used in the area of personal injury law, and brought him on board as an associate. He became a junior partner in 1981 and a senior partner in 1983.
Roy K. S. Chang is licensed to practice law in the State of Hawai`i, the District of Columbia, and before the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the Consumer Lawyers of Hawai`i. He served as chairperson of the Hawaii Criminal Justice Commission and founded the McGruff Program. He has the highest lawyer rating in Martindale-Hubbell, a national lawyer service.
Roy K. S. Chang has been an adjunct professor for the last 10 years at The William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawai`i. He teaches trial practice to young lawyers who want to learn how to do trials.
